Chris Evans Shuts Down Avengers: Doomsday Return Rumors
Chris Evans has denied reports that he will reprise his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite a December report from The Hollywood Reporter suggesting his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Evans has now set the record straight.
Evans Addresses the Speculation
In a recent Esquire interview, part of a cover story on Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie, Evans dismissed the rumors:
“That’s not true. This always happens every couple of years, ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no, happily retired!”
His statement makes it clear: he’s content leaving the role behind.
Mackie Reacts to the News
Mackie, who inherited Captain America’s shield in the MCU, was also surprised by the speculation. He told Esquire:
“I had no idea! A few weeks ago, I spoke with Chris, and it never came up. When I asked him directly, he just said, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’”
Mackie added that he learned about the rumors the same way fans did—through the media.
The Superhero Secrecy Tradition
This isn’t the first time an actor has denied a Marvel return. Andrew Garfield repeatedly refuted rumors before his shocking Spider-Man: No Way Home cameo. Could Evans be following a similar pattern?
What’s Next for the MCU?
Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers, is set for release on May 1, 2026. Adding to the excitement, Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly stepping into the role of Doctor Doom.
For now, Evans insists his days as Steve Rogers are over. But in the world of Marvel, never say never.
