Chris Pratt, the actor who played Mario in the previous film The Super Mario Bros, recently teased plans for Super Mario Bros. 2 in an interview with Screen Rant. The Super Mario Bros. franchise, a favorite for 40 years, might see an expansion in the interconnected cinematic universe of Nintendo characters by Illumination Entertainment. This franchise has introduced several characters, worlds, and storylines across many video game titles, evoking a sense of nostalgia for many fans.
“There’s so much to explore. There are decades worth of [games] to explore, not only with Mario and Peach and Donkey Kong and Luigi and Bowser and Yoshi; that was teased at the end,” Pratt told Screen Rant.
He continued: “It just gets me so excited. Growing up, I was such a Nintendo head, so I was thinking about how everything from Legend of Zelda to the entire Nintendo cinematic universe could be created and what that could look like for all of these characters I love. I mean, there’s no limit. We could talk about it for hours.”
Following its release, the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. received mixed reviews from critics, ultimately earning 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, The Super Mario Bros. amassed $1.36 billion worldwide.
In addition to Pratt, The Super Mario Bros. also stars Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Seth Rogen, Keegan-Michael Key, and Fred Armisen.
