Few film franchises have managed to match the level of success that the Matrix franchise has achieved. Beginning back in 1999, Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne took moviegoers down the rabbit hole of a lifetime as Neo and Morpheus, venturing through a dystopian universe where everything we know is based upon a simulation. The third chapter of the Matrix franchise released nearly two decades ago now, seemingly bringing an end to one of the most iconic film franchises Hollywood has ever seen. Those at the heart of the franchise thought otherwise however and have spent the past few years working on the production of Matrix 4, with new details still emerging about the production just months before its official release date.
Keanu Reeves was a busy man before the pandemic hit and COVID-19 certainly did not do Matrix 4 any favors. The film’s star was also working on John Wick 4 at the same time pre-pandemic and things were brought to a screeching halt. Things are back on schedule now however, with the film’s release date pushed back seven months from May of this year until December 21st, 2021. While they gear up the film to finally hit theaters new details continue to emerge about the project that are sure to excite fans: it has just been revealed that Christina Ricci is set to make an appearance in Matrix 4. The actress’ involvement was discovered in a press kit sent out by Warner Brothers this past week, leaving many to speculate what else the film studio is hiding up their sleeve.
The franchise is certainly trying its hardest to remain true to its roots with the upcoming fourth installment of the Matrix franchise. Reeves will be reunited with Matrix: Revolutions director Lana Wachowski, who also worked with Ricci on the 2008 film Speed Racer. Ricci will not be the only new face joining the production however with Hollywood favorites Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra set to appear in Matrix 4, giving fans plenty to be excited about. Fans can eagerly anticipate the release of Matrix 4 finally this upcoming holiday season.
