As you may already know, The Princess Diaries is officially making a comeback. Anne Hathaway announced it by sharing clips of her iconic scenes from the first two movies, including her famous line “shut up!” As fans have been waiting for over 15 years for a new installment, the announcement of a third movie came as a major surprise—one that shocked not only Princess Diaries fans but also drew attention from various platforms like MTV and Entertainment Tonight, which have shown their support for the sequel.

So far, there hasn’t been much information revealed about the upcoming installment, but over the years, there have been some hints regarding the possibility of a film since the original movies debuted in 2001 and 2004. While a casting call has not yet been announced, it’s well-known that Hathaway will be reprising her role as the princess. To jog your memory, back in 2019, she hinted at the return of Y2K icon Mia Thermopolis and her on-screen grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, played by Julie Andrews.
Nearly five years ago, Hathaway was interviewed on Watch What Happens Live, where a fan asked her to confirm whether there would be a third installment. She responded by saying that a script had been written and that the cast and producers were eager to film it. In a recent interview in March, Andrews also had a sit-down, but this time it was with Today. During that conversation, Andrews expressed…
“It’s been quite a while since the two Diaries were made, and I’m not certain, but sometimes it’s better to leave a good thing as it is,” Andrews said during her interview with Today.
“I don’t like it when people squeeze every last drop out of a subject until it’s exhausted. I would be very happy if we were to make another one, but I don’t expect that to happen.”
On the other hand, fellow original cast member Mandy Moore, who portrayed the mean girl Lana Thomas, seemed enthusiastic about rejoining the franchise, hinting at a possible Princess Diaries 3 on the anniversary of the movie’s release in 2001.
“And just like that, #ThePrincessDiaries celebrates another year and becomes even sweeter! What a wonderful gift,” she posted on Instagram. “As I scroll through old photos that evoke cherished memories, I realize how much I love the number 3”. With everyone on board, let’s stay tuned for what comes next while we wait for more updates!
