In recent years, the creative minds behind Hollywood’s content have been hard at work reliving the glory of past decades. From iconic superhero franchises to timeless cult classics, the entertainment industry has experienced something akin to a modern renaissance in recent decades as these projects are reimagined for new generations of fans in the most remarkable of ways. Advancements in technology have revolutionized and redefined the way in which content is produced and distributed in Hollywood dramatically in recent years, and the result has been a plethora of new content to keep fans appeased for hours on end. Last year Warner Brothers Pictures brought back a classic 80’s film when they rebooted the epic sci-fi fantasy film Dune to rave reviews, and now they are ready to build upon that success with the release of Dune: Part 2 much closer than seemingly anybody expected.
Originally released as a novel in 1965 written by Frank Herbert before being turned into a film in 1984 by David Lynch, Dune tells the story of a futuristic world in which the planet is ruled by a variety of powerful families as they fight for land and resources. This foreign planet also features an array of unique creatures unlike anything we have ever seen in the form of giant space worms which the film’s main characters are forced to contend with in pursuit of their goals, adding a unique layer of action to the sci-fi epic. 2021’s Dune reboot was instead directed by Denis Villeneuve and saw fan-favorite’s Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in the film’s leading roles, and was met with stellar reviews all around as it raked in over $400 million globally. Now they and Warner Brothers are ready to capitalize on that success with the franchise’s next installment Dune: Part 2, and, per Villeneuve, the script to the sequel is already complete and the project’s cast and crew are getting ready to commence production. In an interview with Collider, the director stated: “The screenplay is finished mostly, but it’s always a work in progress. It’ll be a work in progress until final cut, but I will say it’s solidified. I have a script in my hands. We are in prep right now.” Dune: Part 2 is scheduled to debut in theaters on October 20, 2023, and eager fans can continue to check back for further updates on the project as production commences.
Though it may not be as well-known as a franchise like Star Wars, Dune is still a timeless sci-fi classic that many still remember watching for the first time in 1984. 2021’s reboot only built upon the project’s timelessness as it applied the aforementioned new-age technology to the sci-fi classic to truly make it as epic as Frank Herbert originally intended. Now we are seeing the franchise go beyond what was originally conceived in 1984, and eager fans can remain on the lookout for further updates regarding Dune: Part 2 in the coming weeks.
