The Avengers franchise is composed of countless characters, each equipped with their own unique talent or power that makes the legion of superheroes so powerful. From the insanely intelligent and equally wealthy Iron Man to the shape-shifting behemoth that is The Hulk, the crime fighting syndicate has a vast roster that has a little bit of something for everybody. Recently we have even seen secondary characters get spinoff films and series, such as the Black Widow film that debuted last weekend or the WandaVision series currently on Disney+. The franchise remains as strong as ever it seems despite 2019’s Avengers: Endgame seemingly signaling its completion, highlighting how deep Marvel’s bag of tricks goes. Now another Avengers project is in the works for their dedicated fans with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Released in 2016, the first Doctor Strange film starred Benedict Cumberbatch as a neurosurgeon who suffers a life-altering accident that sets him on the path to becoming the titular hero. The project was considered relatively abstract by modern superhero film standards, employing the principles of time and space as well as mythical elements, but was an immense success regardless. Doctor Strange grossed nearly $700 million in box offices around the world and received an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making Cumberbatch a staple in the franchise since the film was released. Now he will get the opportunity to star as the superhero once again in the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Though details remain sparse, we do know that the story is set to pick up where the aforementioned WandaVision series left off and will feature a cameo from Tom Hiddleston’s fan-favorite character, Loki. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is slated to release on March 25th, 2022.
Five years removed from the original film, a lot has happened in the Avengers universe since Doctor Strange was released. It would be impossible to highlight it all, however any fan of the franchise would agree that the superheroes in question have had their work cut out for them. It’s all in a day’s work however, especially as a superhero, and for Cumberbatch the day is far from over. Avengers fans and potential newcomers should remain on the lookout for further updates in the near future about Marvel’s latest venture, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
