Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is the first spin-off in the long-running action franchise starring Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham, and this weekend it went on to make $60.8 million domestically and $120 million abroad. Despite Hobbs & Shaw having had the worst opening weekend numbers for a film in the franchise since 2009’s Fast & Furious, those numbers were more than enough to remove The Lion King from the top spot, with a difference of $70 million.
Compared to the Fate of the Furious‘s $98 million domestic opening weekend in 2017, Hobbs & Shaw‘s initial box office performance doesn’t seem that great, but for a movie released in August it did quite well. Its domestic opening weekend was the sixth-biggest of all time and as the last real action movie of the summer it shouldn’t face much competition from similar films.
