Grammy Award-winning rapper Lupe Fiasco is set to become a faculty member at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where he will instruct students in the institute’s innovative four-year hip-hop program.
Known by his birth name, Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, Lupe Fiasco will serve as a prominent educator in the inaugural Bachelor of Music in Hip Hop program, which the school proudly announced on Instagram this Wednesday.
The program will be overseen by Wendel Patrick, a composer, producer, and educator. In a recent interview with The Hub, Wendel explained that Lupe’s addition to the faculty was an easy decision.
“My vision has always been to involve top-tier practitioners who can teach and mentor our students effectively,” Patrick said. “Lupe is not only an incredibly skilled rapper, but he also embodies a deep commitment to artistic exploration and personal growth, making him an inspiring figure for students. His journey can serve as an inspiring example for student artists as they navigate their own paths in the professional art world.”
As described on the school’s website, the program will combine intensive performance training with Peabody’s Breakthrough Curriculum, which focuses on essential business and career development skills. Students will also explore the cultural history of hip-hop, examining its sociopolitical roots and its evolution into a global movement.
