Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is taking a fresh approach to creating a Blade reboot.
While speaking to Blacktree TV on his press tour for Deadpool & Wolverine, Feige was asked about Blade in connection with Deadpool & Wolverine, which is the first R-rated flick in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In response, the Marvel Studios honcho revealed that Deadpool and Blade could only enter the MCU if they remained R-rated based on the character’s demeanor. He also mentioned that Wesley Snipes and the original 1998 film Blade were key elements to the R-rated experience.
In the chit-chat, Feige also stated why the Blade film is still under wraps. Marvel announced its Blade reboot in July of 2019, but the film’s development has been tough because several writers and directors have left the project hastily over the years. Although the project is still in progress, it was originally scheduled for production in the fall of 2022. However, filmmaker Bassam Tariq stepped away from it due to differing visions for its creative direction.
“I think that’s right,” Feige remarked. “I mean, for the last two years as we’ve been trying to crack that movie, the most important thing for us is not rushing it and making sure we are making the right ‘Blade’ movie.”
“Because there were some great ‘Blade’ movies years ago — they were all rated R. So I think that’s, like Deadpool, inherent with the character of Blade,” he continued.
The new Blade film stars two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and will be directed by Yann Demange.
