In this generation, it can be hard to find a lyricist of the 20-something age bracket who actually speaks about something other than material goods. And when others do find a rapper who uses their words in means of positively influencing society, they make sure to cling on with hope.
One of those artists who’ve paved the way for a bigger change in the world is YBN Cordae. Not only does he flow effortlessly, but every often, the “Kung Fu” rapper will speak on topics that we all related to at one point. Whether it be losing a loved one, finding yourself, cherishing those around and life, or trying to make a dream into reality, YBN Cordae has a song for it all. Another notable piece of his artistry lies in his witty punchlines as well. For instance, YBN Cordae rapped in his verse on 2019’s XXL Freshman, “Feelin’ spaced out like a semi-colon.”
Following the release of his album, The Lost Boy last year, YBN Cordae was nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song at the Grammys. In more recent news, YBN Cordae got a nod of approval from rap icon, Lil Wayne, on his series, Young Money Radio. Once the show started, both rappers made sure to pay their respects toward each other. Then, they spoke in-depth about many topics, including YBN Cordae’s forthcoming album and how he’s been staying occupied during COVID-19.
Though he admits that his next project is in the works, YBN Cordae said that he has at least 50 songs done, so now it’s all about finding the right records, cutting things down, and adding in features. In turn, Lil Wayne jumped at the opportunity of collaborating with the ascending musician.
“All you gotta do is give me the… All you gotta do is text me the song; I’ll murder it and send you the finger, so you know it’s dead,” Lil Wayne said. Cordae responded with a “Say less. Say no more.”
