For as long as they have been in existence, video games have been a source of inspiration for the creative minds of Hollywood and vice versa. Resident Evil is arguably equally successful as a video game franchise as it is a film franchise, while films like Mortal Kombat which released this past April have been directly inspired by legendary video game franchises of the same name. The two industries almost go hand-in-hand, both serving to entertain hordes of fans who are enthralled by the bright colors, flashing lights and the narrative being told. As technology continues to evolve the world of video games only continues to expand as well, implementing VR technology and other new and exciting elements that truly immerse fans into the world they are playing in. This was certainly the case throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with many turning to video games to disrupt the monotony of quarantining for months on end, and a new game has captured the attention of video game players and the streaming world: Netflix will begin production on a new animated series based on the video game Cuphead that has gained significant traction this past year.
Though it was originally released in 2017, over the past year Cuphead has garnered a lot of attention from the video game community. The run-and-gun game has been hailed for its simplicity without sacrificing any of the fun along the way, an uncommon feature for most modern video games that has helped it stand out amongst the crowd. So much so that streaming giant Netflix was forced to take notice, hoping to build the Cuphead universe out even more with a new animated series based upon the game. The Cuphead Show! will utilize the same early 20th-century style of animation as the video game and will follow along as the evil Dice King, voiced by Hollywood veteran Wayne Brady, is defeated once and for all. The project is set to debut on Netflix later this year.
Netflix can seemingly turn almost anything into a television series at this point. The streaming giant has been hard at work since the COVID-19 pandemic began producing original content in droves to satisfy their millions of subscribers. The Cuphead Show! will be another fine addition to the extensive list of original content they have produced over the past year, which is getting hard to keep track of at this point with everything they have done. Interested fans can remain on the lookout for further details about the Cuphead-inspired animated series in the near future.
