Sony Pictures is moving pieces across its theatrical calendar, bringing 24 Jump Street, Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island and several other major projects into focus while pushing Helldivers further into the future.
Hollywood’s release calendar just got a little busier and a little more unpredictable. Sony Pictures is reshuffling several upcoming theatrical releases, setting new dates for projects ranging from Michelle Yeoh‘s action thriller The Surgeon to Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island and the long-awaited return of the Jump Street franchise. Some movies are moving forward. Others are taking the scenic route. And one particularly anticipated video-game adaptation just picked up a much longer wait.
Sony’s New Release Lineup
The latest scheduling changes put several films on the calendar for 2027.
April 2nd, 2027 — The Surgeon
The Michelle Yeoh-led action film is officially set for an April theatrical release.
August 20th, 2027 — Narcs
The comedy starring Mason Thames and Ella Bright follows later in the summer.
November 11th, 2027 — Treasure Island
Ridley Scott’s new interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure arrives in theaters just ahead of the holiday season.
December 10th, 2027 — 24 Jump Street
Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube are officially headed back into the franchise’s chaotic world.
And then there are the movies moving in the opposite direction.
Helldivers Has A Long Road Ahead
Justin Lin’s Helldivers adaptation has been pushed from November 10th, 2027, to June 9th, 2028. The move gives the video-game adaptation considerably more time before audiences finally see it on the big screen.
The project has already experienced a few changes behind the scenes. Jason Momoa was originally attached to star but exited because of scheduling conflicts. Reacher star Alan Ritchson subsequently stepped into the lead role.
The story centers on an elite group of soldiers known as Helldivers as they fight alien creatures threatening the fictional planet of Super Earth. So while the wait just got longer, the mission remains intact.
Grandyear Is Moving Up
Interestingly, not every date change means a longer wait. Grandyear, the first English-language film from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki, has moved forward from February 18th, 2028, to January 14th, 2028. That puts Yamazaki’s next project on screens earlier than previously planned and gives audiences another reason to keep an eye on Sony’s 2028 slate.
24 Jump Street Is Finally Getting Its Moment
After years of development questions surrounding the franchise, 24 Jump Street now has an official theatrical date. The film is expected to bring back Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube, with Rodney Rothman directing. Rothman, known for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is also co-writing the script alongside Hill and Meghan Malloy.
The sequel has been a long-running conversation among fans and the actors themselves. Tatum previously praised the script for the proposed follow-up, calling it the best script he’d read for himself and Hill, while later expressing doubts about whether the project would actually happen because of the financial complications surrounding its numerous producers.
Now? It’s happening. Or at least, Sony has put a date on it. And that’s a pretty significant difference.
Ridley Scott Is Taking Us To Treasure Island
Meanwhile, Ridley Scott is taking on another legendary piece of storytelling with Treasure Island. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson‘s classic novel, the new adaptation features a screenplay from Jack Thorne, who is said to be bringing a fresh perspective to the familiar adventure.
And the casting is already giving the project serious star power. Hugh Jackman will play Blackbeard, with Hugh Grant and Owen Cooper also attached. With Scott behind the camera and that cast leading the voyage, Treasure Island is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing additions to Sony’s 2027 calendar.
Sony’s Calendar Is Telling A Bigger Story
Release dates may look like simple numbers on a studio schedule, but they can completely change the conversation around a movie. For Sony, this latest shuffle puts The Surgeon, Narcs, Treasure Island and 24 Jump Street firmly on the 2027 theatrical map while giving Helldivers more runway and moving Grandyear into an earlier 2028 slot.
It’s a reminder that the movie calendar is never really set in stone. Projects move. Schedules shift. Franchises resurface. And sometimes the movie everyone thought was still stuck in development suddenly gets a release date. So, consider Sony’s calendar officially rearranged. Now the countdown begins.
