Sherman’s Showcase is a new sketch comedy series, that aired this Wednesday, July 31 on IFC, co-created by Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle. The show centers on a long-running fictional musical variety show but has some very real celebrities to back it up. The show was produced by John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co., and it features an array of guest including Legend, Quincy Jones, Tiffany Haddish, Common, Morris Day and Ne-Yo. According to billboard.com, it’s already spawned a soundtrack, and a tour may be in the offing.
With Salahuddin playing host Sherman McDaniels and Riddle as his producer Dutch, amongst many other roles, each episode hovers around a theme. The series time-travels from funk supergroups in the ’70s to R&B divas from the ’90s to commercial parodies to faux-game show segments and more.
The show’s creators, who met while performing in an a cappella group at Harvard in the ’90s, are music-obsessed and their goal for the show is to bring their viewers along with them on their beloved musical journey.
