Few directors if any have had as successful of a career as the esteemed Christopher Nolan. Best known for directing movies such as the 2010 film Inception and 2014’s space epic Interstellar, Nolan has made a name for himself undertaking big projects and having a strong tendency to deliver on those projects with his imaginative vision. While his resume only includes 16 directing credits, all of those credits are for blockbuster films that have been huge box office successes that have helped define his career. Now the revered director is gearing up for his next project after being acquired by Universal Pictures, set to be a film about the man responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb.
Based upon a script written by Nolan himself, the project acquired by Universal this week follows the story of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer who headed the research team responsible for creating the atomic bomb in WWII. As director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, Oppenheimer oversaw the Manhattan Project during the 1940’s as the United States invested heavily into the research of nuclear weapons. This research would be what ultimately helped bring WWII to an end and helped firmly cement Oppenheimer’s place in world history, making him the perfect subject for a Christopher Nolan film. Following a bidding war between several major studios that took place over the past few weeks, Nolan ultimately opted to go with Universal for his new project that has been greenlit to begin production at the start of next year.
While the project is still in its infantile stages, it is abundantly obvious that demand is already high for Nolan’s latest film. With some of the most prominent studios in the world fighting it out for the rights to said project, it is safe to assume moviegoers will be just as high on the new movie when it eventually hits theaters. That probably won’t be for some time however, and we will likely find out more details about the project before that day comes. Until then, moviegoers can remain on the lookout for further updates about the latest Christopher Nolan movie.
