I know everyone has a favorite stop-motion animation film that they have fallen in love with at one point or another. Windell & Wild gives us a blast from the past while remaining current. With voices we loved for years and a director that has given us thrills and chills before. Mixing the new with the old perfectly will always result in a beautiful work of art. I’m sure it’s safe to say, we can just throw it in the lineup of classic stop animation like Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline.
Let’s start by mentioning the legend himself, Henry Selick. Henry already has a huge lineup under his belt but Windell & Wild’s animation was beyond top tier. Henry has directed great movies such as Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas, and James and The Giant Peach. While a lot of people would say it was Tim Burton they would be sadly wrong, which is a common mistake. Tim however was a producer on some of those projects. He has definitely reached a new level and solidified him for now and forever.
As for the talent in the movie, we have an amazing reuniting of Jordan Peele & Keegan Michael Key. A familiar duo that had a show together called Key and Peele. These two voiced the demons Windell and Wild. While the legendary Angela Bassett voiced Sister Helly, who’s a mysterious nun with a strange secret. Sam Zelaya voices the first trans-stop-motion animation character, Raul. The hilarious James Hong voiced Father Bests and kept us laughing the whole time. Last but certainly not least, we have Lyric Ross voicing Kat, the butt-kicking, demon-fighting main character.
This movie has a power squad surrounding it, Veteran director, an amazing cast, and old school stop-animation this movie has no choice but to be amazing. What was your favorite stop-motion animation classic?
Windell & Wild premiered on Netflix on October 21, 2022.
