First Trailer For ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Teases Cults, Chaos, And A New Era Of Horror

The rage is far from over. Sony has unveiled the first trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the latest entry in the landmark horror saga that began more than two decades ago with Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later.

Directed by Candyman filmmaker Nia DaCosta, The Bone Temple picks up where this summer’s 28 Years Later left off—further expanding the franchise’s bleak, infected-ravaged world while introducing sinister new forces of human corruption.

From Survival To Cult Obsession

In The Bone Temple, Alfie Williams’ Spike is drawn into the orbit of a disturbing cult led by the enigmatic Sir Jimmy Crystal played by Jack O’Connell. What begins as reluctant survival quickly turns into a high-stakes clash of ideologies, as the cult’s growing influence collides with the unyielding experiments of Dr. Kelson played by Ralph Fiennes and the terrifying dominance of Samson, an infected Alpha leader played by Chi Lewis-Parry. The result? A volatile three-way struggle where humanity’s darkest instincts prove as dangerous as the infection itself.

DaCosta’s Distinctive Vision

Speaking with Rolling Stone, DaCosta emphasized that her installment won’t attempt to replicate Danny Boyle’s iconic style but instead carve its own identity:

“My big pitch…was, I’m going to make this my own. I’m not going to try to make a Danny Boyle movie. Because that’s impossible to make. He’s so special. And it didn’t really interest me.”

She described The Bone Temple as “bonkers, idiosyncratic, and very artistically personal,” promising that while its tone is difficult to define, it maintains the franchise’s signature unpredictability and raw energy.

The Road Ahead For The 28 Saga

Since its debut in 2002, the 28 Days Later series has redefined modern horror—first with Boyle and Alex Garland’s searing original, then with 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, and most recently with 28 Years Later, which reignited the franchise earlier this year.

With The Bone Temple set for U.S. release on January 16th, 2026, and yet another sequel already in the works, it’s clear the rage virus is evolving into something bigger. A long-form horror mythology that fuses survival terror with unsettling explorations of human extremism. For fans of horror that refuses to play by the rules, DaCosta’s entry may be the most daring yet.

Where To Catch Up

For now, get familiar with the franchise as 28 Years Later is now available to rent or buy on Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and other major digital platforms. Next up, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hits theaters nationwide on January 16th, 2026, via Sony Pictures releasing. The trailer suggests that the 28 universe isn’t just surviving. In fact, it’s mutating into something more terrifying than ever.
