Because Minions & Monsters didn’t do so well in theaters, Universal has another plan up their sleeves. On August 11, the movie will be releasing on digital platforms in hopes of upping the Despicable Me franchise’s numbers. At first Minions & Monsters seemed like it was doing well. It opened with $37 million during its first weekend, but ticket sales slowed down quickly after that.
Since its premiere on July 1, Minions & Monsters made $450.4 million worldwide, with $169.7 million coming from the U.S. and $280.7 million from overseas. But even with those numbers, it’s still $94 million behind the original Despicable Me, which was previously the franchise’s lowest earner.
Minions & Monsters follows the Minions in 1920s Hollywood as they search for monsters to star in a movie they’re making.
