When most of us think of superheroes, we tend to think of some of the more traditional names such as Superman and Batman. While they and any others that may come to mind have played a substantial role in defining what is a superhero, they are certainly not alone. In fact, the creative minds who create these characters typically create entire universes in which they exist alongside villains as well as other heroes. The best modern example of this is the Avengers franchise which is comprised of dozens of characters each with their own unique backstory, and one of those characters is ready to return to theaters for their next installment: Benedict Cumberbatch is ready to reprise his role in the new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and it looks like things are about to get messy.
Debuting back in 2016, Doctor Strange starred Cumberbatch as an incredibly unique superhero who harnesses the power of time and space in his attempts to fight evil. A far cry from the super strength or flying abilities that the stereotypical superhero is notorious for, the titular hero of this budding new franchise was a pleasant surprise to fans of the genre that has translated into considerable success. Since then, Cumberbatch has reprised the role in the aforementioned Avengers franchise as well as in the most recent Marvel release Spider-Man: No Way Home which premiered in theaters last Friday. Now he is ready to make a return to the silver screen on his own this time, with Marvel unveiling the first official trailer for the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In it, the hero finds himself at odds with a plethora of new challenges highlighted by an evil version of himself that puts the emphasis on the “madness” and could potentially spell trouble for Cumberbatch and company. The action-packed trailer can be seen below, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness can be seen in theaters on May 6th, 2022.
While some superhero franchises pump out a new film every couple of years, Cumberbatch saw a five year break between films as Marvel fleshed out other projects and the COVID-19 pandemic hit. This trailer certainly seems to make up for that however, placing the superhero in seemingly as much madness as the title indicates. The return of Doctor Strange has been a long time coming, and the trailer makes it seem as though it’ll all be worth the wait. Fans can find out for themselves this spring when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness makes its way into theaters.
