Chris Pratt recently admitted that his Garfield voice is different from his past animated characters during The Garfield Movie premiere in Los Angeles this weekend.
While being interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet, the actor explained how his Garfield voice was inspired by his character Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec, but with some yawning in the mix. Unlike his other characters, Pratt had to switch from his normal voice to the one he uses for Dwyers, which really challenged him to portray the lazy cat accurately. Pratt also gave director Mark Dinal credit for pushing him to sound like himself.
“I was basically just using my own voice and trying to be honest and be real and trust Mark,” Pratt continued. “What he believed was that he wanted it to sound just like me. So I said, ‘Okay, you hired the right guy. I know how to do Chris Pratt, I know how to do that just fine.'”
As for his other characters like Mario in Super Mario Bros. and Emmet in The Lego Movie, Pratt used his character in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for inspo.
“You had to find some version that was different than myself,” he explained. “But not hardcore Mario from the games because that would grow a little tiresome, I think.”
The Garfield Movie is about the beloved orange, fat, lasagna-loving cat named Garfield who reunites with his long-lost father Vic, played by Samuel L. Jackson, and dog Odie, played by Harvey Guillén. As time passes, Garfield and Odie are upended from their lifestyles and forced to join Vic on a dangerous heist. The cast also includes Hannah Waddingham, Cecily Strong, Nicholas Hoult, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Snoop Dogg.
