On Thursday, September 22nd, 2022, DJ Suss One in association with The Feature Presentation hosted an exclusive star-studded advanced screening of the highly anticipated movie On the Come Up featuring and directed by Sanaa Lathan as Jay alongsideactor Jamila Gray Briana aka Lawless, Method Man as Supreme and Lil Yachty. Directed by Sanaa Lathan, On the Come Up is based on the book written by Author Angie Thomas and tells the story ofnew comerJamila C. Gray aka Bri, a talented 16-year-old rapper, who attempts to take the battle rap scene by storm in order to lift up her family and do right by the legacy of her father — a local hip hop legend whose career was cut short by gang violence. But when her first hit song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, she finds herself torn between the authenticity that got her this far and the false persona that the industry wants to impose upon her.
Dinner and a Movie themed night kicked off with a private pre-movie mixer. Guests mingled through-out the lounge in excitement while drinking endless cocktails and enjoying an array of appetizers. Author Angie Thomas and lyrical content creator Rapsody were showered with accolades as the evening commenced.
Celebrity guests such as recording artist Rapsody, national best-selling author Angie Thomas, award-winning producer Amadeus, VH1’s Black Ink costar Donna Lombardi, R&B singer LeA Robinson, rappers Mariah Lynn and Lucky Don along with comedian Mr. Commodore were also attendance and were found mingling throughout the theater lounge while others joined DJ Suss One for photo ops on the red carpet.
After the one-hour cocktail mixer, guests were escorted to their personalized assigned seats. Once seated they were greeted by personalized name cards and popcorn along with a customized menu handpicked with dinner and dessert by DJ Suss One himself.
DJ Suss One opened up the event by hosting an impromptu Q&A with On the Come Up actress/producer Sanaa Lathan. This is Sanaa Lathan’s directorial debut and she highlighted rapper Rapsody’s role as the lyrical content creator for raps showcased throughout the movie.
As always, every seat was filled with influential people who attended in support of DJ Suss One’s Dinner and a Movie series. DJ Suss One ended thenight by thanking his guests for attending and inviting each and every one back to experience the next Dinner and a Movie.
On the Come Up officially hits theaters Friday, September 23, 2022!
