Disney was founded nearly a century ago now, making some of its characters and films essentially just as old. As a result they have seen countless reincarnations over the years in the forms of reboots, sequels, spinoffs and much more. Live action remakes specifically have done well for Disney the past decade with recent films like 2019’s Aladdin, a remake of the 1992 animated original, and this year’s Cruella, an 101 Dalmatians remake, both performing well. Now they are looking to continue this trend and explore the world of Disney princesses further this time with their next project. Disney is now producing a live action remake of the 1937 classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and have already cast a heavyweight name to star as the princess.
Based upon a 19th century German novel by Brothers Grimm, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs follows the iconic Disney princess as she escapes evil and befriends seven dwarfs in her escape. Since the original animated film released over eight decades ago, Snow White has become an iconic piece of Disney folklore as one of their legendary princesses. It looks like Disney is ready to bring her to life now with a live action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs currently in production at the company. Now they have cast their princess in Rachel Zegler who is currently in high-demand for her work on the upcoming West Side Story remake directed by Steven Speilberg, which hasn’t even been released yet. Production on the Snow Whiite and the Seven Dwarfs remake is expected to begin next year.
Disney has truly been on a tear with their remakes in the past decade. From films such as 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and 2019’s The Lion King, Disney clearly wants to bring their classic catalog into the modern era. Some have even become franchises, with many of the aforementioned films having sequels their predecessors did not. Now they will be trying to do the same with Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and have cast a great name to lead the effort. Fans will have to remain patient though as production is not set to begin on the film until 2022 with a potential release date still up in the air.
