A few scenes from MCU’s upcoming movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps recently premiered at CinemaCon. In the previews, the superheroes live in cool, retro-style worlds where they’re treated like celebrities. Julia Garner is even introduced as the Silver Surfer, playing a version of the character named Shalla-Bal. One clip shows her character warning the Fantastic Four about their planet being in danger and that they’ve essentially got a target on their back. The team has to fight back, even as people start to lose trust in them. They’re not just fighting enemies, however, they’re trying to prove that they can still be heroes.

One jaw-dropper in the plot is that Sue Storm aka The Invisible Woman is pregnant. Actress Vanessa Kirby, who plays the supermom, talked to Entertainment Weekly about her pregnancy and why it speaks volumes.
“Matt and I were very conscious of the fact that we haven’t really seen a mother with a baby in these superhero roles,” Kirby said. “One of the aspects I’ve always loved about Sue’s character is her transformation into Malice, when her darker side comes out. I was fascinated by that part of her journey. So I wanted to bring shades of Malice into her portrayal, not just make her the sweet, stereotypical mother figure.”

Kirby went on to say, “I’ve always been drawn to the complexity of femininity, how can a woman be everything at once? Not just strong, powerful, and invincible, but also a mother. Giving birth is a superhero act in itself. What I love about the Fantastic Four is that they’re a real, messy family. They argue, they struggle, they make mistakes, and they’re still trying to figure it all out together.”
Directed by WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman, The Fantastic Four explores the lives of Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, The Human Torch, The Thing, and the Silver Surfer. It pulls inspiration from the comic book that launched the Marvel Comics universe in 1961. The characters are created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The movie stars Pedro Pascal, Julia Garner, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, to name a few.
