In 2016, Director Fede Alvarez delivered Don’t Breathe to the world, a horror film less reliant on blood and gore like his past works and drawing more on the occult and suspenseful. The movie was a huge success, grossing over 150 million dollars globally compared to a 9 million dollar budget. Now, Alvarez is hoping to strike gold once again with a sequel. It was surprisingly announced that production on Don’t Breathe 2 wrapped just a few short weeks ago, now we know when to expect it to hit theaters: August 2021.
This release date is tentative of course, barring any further COVID delays, but gives Alvarez and crew plenty of time to make the film exactly as they see fit. While Alvarez still played a large role in the writing and directing of the sequel, he will be handing the reins over to Rodo Sayagues to make his directorial debut. Receiving an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is no surprise that the story about a robbery gone dark has achieved such acclaim and Sony has ordered a sequel. The film has been shooting throughout Europe, and casting details are still sparse but it has been confirmed that Stephen Lang, one of the centerpieces of the original film, will be returning for the sequel.
Alvarez is no stranger to horror, having directed an Evil Dead reboot that left horror fans appeased to say the least. The Don’t Breathe series is the next step in that line of work, and he and production company Screen Gems are putting their best foot forward in ensuring that. Only time will tell if the August 2021 release date will hold true; if so, it will give us something to look forward to next summer as the pandemic potentially rages on.
