After only one season, HBO has announced the cancellation of Lovecraft Country. The horror drama is based on Matt Ruff’s novel and created by Misha Green. The 10-episode series was launched back in August of 2020 and was expected to be picked up by HBO for an additional season. However, HBO released an official statement when speaking to Deadline which stated,
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”
Fans were surprised to hear this announcement, which comes only a few months after Casey Bloys (HBO/Cinemax President of Programming) gave a promising update on the series when he said,
“Misha is working with a small team of writers and they’re coming up with a take. She had a book to go on in the first season, she and the writers wanted to go off and take some time to go out and figure out without a book with these characters, what’s the journey we want to go on. We all want to be sure she’s got a story to tell. That’s where she is right now, working on those ideas. I’m very hopeful, as is Misha, so we’re giving them the time to work.”
It seems as though HBO has decided to stick to the script of Ruff’s novel ahead of Green finishing her season two ideas. Green did take to social media following the news, confirming that season two was in the making. She stated, “Wish we could have brought you #LovecraftCountry: Supremacy. Thank you to everyone who watched and engaged. #noconfederate,” captioning a picture of a map, a teaser for season two.
Lovecraft Country is about the story of young black man who travels across the segregated 1950s United States in search of his missing father, learning of dark secrets plaguing a town. The series starred Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Aunjanue Ellis, Michael K. Williams and Courtney B. Vance. Although the news about the series being canceled is unfortunate, season one is still available to view on HBO. Check it out here.
