The trailer for Jason Reitman‘s upcoming Saturday Night Live movie teases the behind-the-scenes chaos at the NBC sketch show before it officially aired on Oct. 11, 1975. Moreso, the mini visual highlights the last 90 minutes before the first episode. Some scenes include a heated exchange between series creator Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle) and NBC executive Dick Ebersol (Cooper Hoffman).
“Lorne, 90 minutes of live television by a group of 20-year-olds who have never made anything? Do you ever stop and wonder why they said yes [to] a counterculture show starring total unknowns, with zero narrative and even less structure? They want you to fail,” Ebersol says in the clip.
Lorne responds: “We just have to make it to air.”
The Saturday Night Live movie also stars Dylan O’Brien (Dan Aykroyd), Lamorne Morris (Garrett Morris), Cory Michael Smith (Chevy Chase), Matt Wood (John Belushi), Ella Hunt (Gilda Radner), Emily Fairn (Laraine Newman), Willem Dafoe (David Tebet), Nicholas Braun (Jim Henson), Matthew Rhys (George Carlin), Kaia Gerber (Jacqueline Carlin), J.K. Simmons (Milton Berle), Jon Batiste (Billy Preston), Andrew Barth Feldman (Neil Levy), Naomi McPherson (Janis Ian) Finn Wolfhard as an NBC page and Kim Matula (Jane Curtin).
Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan penned the screenplay based on their interviews with former and current Saturday Night Love cast members, writers, and other team members. The series is currently heading into its 50th season. Erica Mills and JoAnn Perritano serve as the movie’s executive producers.
