Earlier this week, Mick Jenkins released his seven-track collective, The Circus, which offers Jenkins’ spitting that real rap over lush arrangements and booming 808’s. Similarly, Jenkins calls on the creative and eccentric rap duo, EarthGang, to assist him in The Circus’ third song, “The Light.” Previously, the charismatic trio vibed out together on EarthGang’s “House.”
“The Light” has a musical styling that blends Andre 3000-esque with warm soul and jazz. This track, in particular, sees Johnny Venus illustrating his verse through melodies and elaborative rhymes that speak about his past. Following after is Jenkins, who touches base on police brutality and what comes with being the depiction of a black rapper’s success story. Closing things off, WowGR8 adds some pizzazz on the track. Like Venus, GR8 sheds light on his dark times, but comes to a realization, “Either take what you want or you make what you earn.”
