Disney’s Moana 2 has smashed the box office with $57.5 million on its opening day, November 27. According to The Wrap, Moana 2 is in the running to gain the first-ever $200 million-plus 5-day launch on Thanksgiving weekend. Should Moana 2 continue its success, it’ll hit the Thanksgiving 5-day record of $125 million set by Frozen II in 2019 even after inflation adjustments.
Moana 2‘s $59 million profit includes a Disney Animation record $13.8 million from Tuesday’s movie screenings. Still, Moana 2 has cashed in more money than any animated film that hit big screens on a Wednesday. Last year, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was in first place, earning a whopping $31.7 million record.
“Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers,” the official logline reads.
In Moana 2, Moana travels into the dangerous, long-lost waters of Oceania after receiving an abrupt call from her ancestors.
Moana stars Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, who will reprise their roles as Moana and Maui in the second installment. The first film, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, amassed over $600 million at the box office and earned two Oscar nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
