In 2021 Netflix has remained committed to releasing copious amounts of new, original content for their customers who have been forced to quarantine as a result of COVID-19. Last year we saw the release of series’ like Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, a limited series that brought Joe Exotic newfound fame, and Selena, a series based upon the life of Latinx music superstar Selena Quintanilla–Perez. 2021 has an equally strong year for the streaming giant with films like Eric Andre’s Bad Trip and the animated film The Mitchells vs. The Machines receiving a considerable amount of attention. Netflix does not appear to be slowing down however, slowly putting the pieces together for their next big project: Lady Killer will feature Black Lively in the starring role and Diablo Cody has been pegged to direct the upcoming adaptation.
While Lady Killer might sound like a brand of bad men’s cologne from the 1980’s, the film’s title is actually more literal than one might think. The project is an adaptation of a comic book by Joëlle Jones and Jamie S. Rich of the same name in which possibly the most unsuspecting individual has a gargantuan secret. Lively is set to star as Josie Schuller, a 1950’s housewife who is a mother by day and a professional killer by night that can navigate either realm with ease, and will also serve as a producer on the upcoming project; Cody, best known for her work on films like Juno and Jennifer’s Body, will take over the director’s chair. They will be joined by producers Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg of Dark Horse Entertainment, the production arm of the comic company that publishes Lady Killer.
Netflix has promised its customers a wide array of content and they aim to deliver on that promise. Even if they have to take matters into their own hands, producing a wide range of original content from animated movies to film adaptations of other projects. Lady Killer will be a delivery on that promise for fans interested in mature and edgy content much like the films Diablo Cody has previously worked on, highlighting how good of a match the streaming giant has seemingly made.
