The new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming action thriller Atlas makes it look more like a buddy cop film. In a matter of minutes, the clip teases a possible union between artificial intelligence and humans as they come together to save the world.
The movie, which stars Jennifer Lopez and Simu Liu, finds agent Atlas Shephard on the hunt for a malicious A.I. terrorist named Harlan, who’s set on killing the human race. Despite not being too fond of A.I., Atlas must put her faith in a technologically advanced voice inserted in her robotic armor along her journey. After being stranded on a different planet, Atlas partners up with her suit to survive and protect their future.
“Atlas is someone who has basically shut out the world around her,” Lopez revealed to Netflix. “She doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t want anything to do with AI.”
She continues: “I loved that this is a big sci-fi action movie, but at its core, it’s a story of friendship — and a love story, in a way. This is a different kind of love between two beings who connect in disastrous circumstances and teach each other how to be more human.”
Atlas is written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite. The film is directed by Brad Peyton.
“Atlas is told through the lens of a woman who’s learning to trust after undergoing a trauma that’s upended her life,” Peyton explains to Netflix. “It’s a reminder of how we have to have deep, meaningful relationships in our lives, in one way, shape, or form. That you can’t do everything by yourself; you have to choose to trust people at a certain point and let them in.”
