To most, animated television shows and films are designed for imaginative children who are captivated by the simplest of things. This isn’t entirely the case however, with a number of successful animated shows for adults popping up over the past few decades. Ranging from classics like The Simpsons to more modern takes on the average American family such as American Dad, the genre of animated programming has expanded tremendously and continues to do so today. Another excellent example of an animated series designed for adults and definitely not children is South Park, a satirical comedy that utilizes crude humor to convey messages and ideas in a rather ingenious way. Always ready to poke fun at virtually any potentially taboo topic, Paramount has announced the release date and provided fans with more details about the upcoming sequel to their COVID-19 special South Park: Post COVID: The Return of COVID.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly been no laughing matter, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, have always been eager to tackle touchy topics head-on. Over the course of 23 seasons the array of topics they have explored is vast, with their most recent endeavor being inspired by the disease that has reshaped the way of life for virtually the entire world since it first arose. A few weeks ago, they released a movie special titled South Park: Post COVID via Paramount’s Paramount+ streaming network that explored the lasting impacts of COVID-19 pandemic upon their small Colorado town. However, as many of us now realize, the pandemic isn’t entirely over quite yet and, as a result, Parker and Stone have cooked up a sequel to the aforementioned special titled South Park: Post COVID: The Return of COVID. In the first look trailer provided by Paramount, viewers are taken into the future as the pandemic has taken hold of society once again and the gang at the center of South Park is forced to contest with the virus once again but this time as adults. It should be interesting to see what they come up with this time, and fans can catch South Park: Post COVID: The Return of COVID when it premieres on Paramount+ December 16th.
After 300 episodes and a variety of specials, most television series tend to get stale or repetitive. The benefit of an animated series is the flexibility its creators have in adapting over time, and South Park has certainly adapted itself quite well as it tackles a myriad of sociopolitical issues. While the humor may not be for everybody, the ideas South Park conveys typically warrant some merit, and it will be interesting to see what they come up with this time. Paramount+ subscribers and fans of the iconic series can catch South Park: Post COVID: The Return of COVID on Paramount+ next week.
