It was reported earlier this year that original writer Henry Gayden was returning to write the script for Shazam 2 and that David F. Sandberg was expected to return to direct as well. And now, Warner Bros. has officially set the Shazam 2 release date for April 2022. The release of Shazam 2 will arrive in theaters almost exactly three years after the original film. With Zachary Levi back to star, it can be expected that Asher Angel will also return as Billy Batson, but no information has been released regarding this yet.
When Shazam! was first being released it was described early on as Big meets Superman and as the most light-hearted film DC has made up to date. When the superhero movie hit theaters earlier this year, the film lived up to those descriptions. The film received very positive reviews from critics and, with a smaller budget, became a hit for the studios after earning $364 million globally.
This release date for Shazam 2 comes as WB continues to plot out the next several years of the DCEU. Starting in 2021, WB and DC intend to release three live-action movies per year. Releasing The Batman, The Suicide Squad, and Black Adam in late 2021 will kick off this trend and now they have Shazam 2 kicking off the 2022 slate. This will be followed by the newly announced The Flash release date and Aquaman 2 at the end of the year.
