The 93rd annual Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars is set to air April 25, starting at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on ABC. After a chaotic year of closed theaters, it seems like the popular award show is adapting to change. The Oscars not only changed the guidelines required to become eligible for nomination, but also changed the diversity of the nominees and it’s beautiful to see!
The Oscars was originally set to air on February 28, but was postponed to April 25 because of the coronavirus pandemic, per the Academy. Along with the postponement of the show, the eligibility window for qualifying featured films was also extended until February 28th. Other changes to guidelines such as films having to be in theaters to qualify have also been waived this year. View updated guidelines here.
“With challenge comes change,” is a quote that reflects the diversity of the 2021 Oscar nominees. 2020 not only changed many lives with the coronavirus pandemic, but it also sparked many global protests of people everywhere demanding racial justice. The Academy must have been watching because this year, setting a new record:
For the first time two women are up for best director, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennel.
