The Weeknd has finally unveiled the new remix of his After Hours track, “In Your Eyes,” which features power-house rapper Doja Cat.
This remix is easily the biggest, most anticipated one on the entire album. By introducing Doja’s spicy, and buoyant energy into this 80’s inspired, synth-tipped record the overall vibe is immediately elevated. Set to the composition of a sleek saxophone, strings, and electronic loops both The Weeknd and Doja come together in perfect harmony.
As The Weeknd sings about the doubts and fears that can seep in when expressing vulnerable feelings within a relationship Doja joins in as a mirror to his reflection. In the classic style of call-and-response she sings. “You always try to hide the pain/You always know just what to say/I always look the other way,” to which he sings. “I’m blind, I’m blind/In your eyes, you lie, but I don’t let it define you/Oh, define you.” Doja Cat continues the conversation with her sultry verse. “I never lied when I cried for you,” she purrs. “And I know you cried, too … always had to say bye to you.” Later, she raps, “One day I’m giving you space, and the next day you’re giving me face” about the song’s emotional tug-of-war.
One thing we’ve definitely observed here is Doja Cats lyrical versatility and vocal range. As she switched between singing feathery cadences and spitting hard-hitting bars she proves how she is fully ready for another Billboard chart topper. Coming off her first Hot 100 No. 1 with “Say So” featuring Nicki Minaj, she informs fans that more star-studded collaborations are on the way.
