When it comes to singing, few musicians are as revered as the late and great Whitney Houston. Kicking off her career in the 1980’s, Houston received acclaim almost immediately and was scooped up by Arista Records to record her self-titled debut album in 1985. She would go on to marry another esteemed artist in R&B singer Bobby Brown in 1992, however this marriage would only spell disaster for Houston and contribute to her descent. Earlier this week, producers announced the casting of Ashton Sanders, of Moonlight fame, to play the iconic Bobby Brown alongside Naomi Ackie, who has been cast to play Houston, and give moviegoers an inside look at arguably one of the most dysfunctional relationships in the history of Hollywood. Their marriage and the rest of Houston’s remarkable career will be explored in further depth in I Wanna Dance With Somebody, set to premiere sometime next year.
While many remember Whitney Houston’s career for the plethora of controversy she was involved in, her talent is indisputable. Her 1992 song I Will Always Love You is one of the most iconic tracks in the history of recorded music and remains an integral piece of modern pop culture, even after death almost a decade ago. Now her talent and career will be celebrated in the upcoming project that should illuminate the world of Whitney Houston to countless moviegoers who simply aren’t fully aware.
