Zendaya (Euphoria, Dune) and Sam Levinson have come together again for Malcolm & Marie which was recently bought by Netflix, for a high price. The Euphoria star and director teamed up along with much of the same crew from the show, to create this Quarantine-made film. Malcolm & Marie was filmed from June 17 to July 7. It was shot on 35mm film in black and white and was the first movie to wrap filming during the pandemic.
John David Washington (Tenet, BlacKkKlansman) will play opposite Zendaya in the title role of Malcolm, a filmmaker with a new film set to be a big success. Zendaya plays his girlfriend, Marie, and after celebrating his movie the night takes a rocky turn and the couple’s relationship is tested. Netflix described it as a “witty, lush, romantic drama” in a press release.
News of the project broke in July with a teaser photo from Zendaya on social media. After production for the second season of Euphoria was shut down due to COVID-19, Zendaya asked Levinson to write a film that only took him six days to finish writing. To ensure the safety of the cast and crew, the three-week production had doctors and lawyers involved throughout the entire process overseeing health protocols.
The streaming giant bought the worldwide rights for $30 million coming out of the Toronto Film Festival this past weekend, according to Deadline.
A trailer for Malcolm & Marie is highly anticipated, and a release date has yet to be set for the film to be available on Netflix.
