A fast decade and four films later, the Insidious franchise has grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide. Production company Blumhouse is seemingly hoping to build upon this success after announcing plans for a fifth Insidious film at their first annual BlumFest earlier this week. Not only did they announce plans of the film’s production, but also that series actor Patrick Wilson will be making his directorial debut as he takes the director’s chair for the upcoming film. Wilson starred as father Josh Lambert in the first two films of the series, and he will be reprising this role as the upcoming film is set to follow the family in time a decade later with Ty Simpkins also set to reprise his role as Dalton Lambert.
Wilson is certainly no slouch when it comes to the horror genre, having also starred in The Conjuring horror series shortly after the Insidious films began. Now, he looks to take his success in the genre a step forward and follow behind legendary director James Wan’s, director of the first two Insidious films as well as the Saw franchise, footsteps. Wan will also be returning to work as producer of the upcoming film alongside series co-creator Leigh Whannell, proving that the upcoming film is truly set to be a reunion that picks up where the first two films left off. While only time will tell who else is set to return for the fifth film of the series, fans are sure to be excited regarding the sheer prospect of another installment.
The horror genre has seen a revamp in the past decade, and production company Blumhouse has been at the forefront of it with films such as the Insidious franchise, The Purge franchise and Academy Award winning Get Out. This really just begins to crack the surface of the success they have achieved with their low-budget film model, and the benefits have been substantial to say the least. It is only right that they look after one of their own and they are doing just that in letting Wilson direct, who has been working alongside the company since virtually their inception in 2009 with the first Insidious film releasing in 2010. Wilson is excited for the opportunity to direct, speaking briefly at BlumFest upon the film’s announcement: “I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices.
