In 1988 moviegoers around the world were first introduced to the murderous doll best known as “Chucky”. The 1988 film Child’s Play that brought the character to the forefront of the horror genre was as much a commercial success as it was culturally, nearly quintupling its budget in box office receipts while laying the roots for one of horror’s most memorable franchises. Now after over half a dozen films and hundreds of millions in box office receipts, Don Mancini, one of the franchise’s original creators,is still hoping to take the historic franchise one step further. After three decades of success, Chucky will now be making the transition from film to television in conjunction with SYFY with Mancini set to return as showrunner.
While we are long removed from the original Child’s Play film, Chucky has permeated pop culture in the decades following his debut with ease. Since the 1988 film’s release viewers have seen Chucky get married and have a child, all while continually reeking havoc all throughout the southside of Chicago. Now the evil doll will be more accessible than ever as Chucky is poised to make the transition to television in a new deal with SYFY for the first time in franchise history. Now a ten episode slate is set to hit the network this upcoming fall with Lexa Doig of the CW’s Arrow set to star in the new series alongside Hollywood veteran Devon Sawa and newcomer Zackary Arthur.
Fans may remember that this is not the first time in recent history to revisit the world of Chucky. 2019’s Child’s Play attempted to reboot the legendary franchise however reviews were not favorable and fans were left disappointed, virtually flushing any plans for future films down the drain. This time around however should be very different with Mancini returning to work on the new SYFY series, whereas he was not involved in the 2019 film. With the original mind who brought Chucky to life in control of the reigns once again, fans are surely in for something special. Production has recently begun on the new series and fans can look forward to it’s debut this fall.
