If you watch television, you’re almost definitely familiar with HBO. The premium cable network has established themselves as one of the preeminent providers of content that dates back decades and have entertained hordes of fans in the process. HBO series like The Sopranos and The Wire are regarded as some of the greatest television shows of all time to this very day, yet the network continues to press the pedal to the metal in producing new content. This week they unveiled a trailer that exemplifies that perfectly in what should be a gripping new series about an international spy during one of the most contentious times in world history in The Informant.
Set to star Gergely Váradi in the leading role, The Informant is set in 1985 and follows a young Hungarian man who is put in a precarious situation when he is forced to live a double life in the hopes of saving his brother. He does this by infiltrating the opposing political party and becoming a member of their cohort despite secretly being a government informant, putting himself in the midst of a deadly game of cat and mouse. This applies to his mentality as well as he is forced to deal with the duplicity that his newfound job entails and he begins to question which side he should really be fighting for, and the trailer exemplifies all of this exceptionally well. Though the main characters of The Informant appear to be no older than college students, they are the heart and soul of political unrest that has afflicted their country and HBO’s official trailer for the series captures their fight for justice excellently while also highlighting the duality of the main character’s role in the process. It certainly looks promising, and HBO Max subscribers can watch The Informant when it premieres on April 1st.
HBO certainly picked an interesting time to unveil a new series like The Informant. Geopolitical tensions are rising daily and World War III seems imminent to some, and The Informant is set during a very similar time period that should help the show resonate especially well with audiences. We will just have to see exactly how well it does that when the series premieres in a few weeks.
