Romey‘s latest track, “Fear The Deer,” serves as an anthem for the Milwaukee Bucks. The two-minute and fifty-one-second record finds the Chicago native and midwest rapper cheering on the basketball team after winning the NBA Championship.
Because the Bucks players put their blood, sweat, and tears into defeating the opposing team, they left with a giant W. Romey reflects on the team’s perseverance throughout “Fear The Deer,” giving them credit where it’s due. For example, he shouts out certain players from the basketball team.
He spits, “Greek Freak is that dude/And like he said in that interview/We don’t play with our food/We gon’ ride or die for our team whether we win or whether we lose.” This passage happens to be Romey’s favorite as well.
He explains, “Our mentality here is we are not satisfied with what we accomplished yesterday. So let’s continue to go hard and strive for greatness today.”
This championship is one for the books! Romey expresses that the Bucks have made history. But, moreover, this is their year for the taking! This newfound victory highlights the true essence of working hard and teamwork. Toward the closing, he uses vivid lyrics to illustrate the moment the Bucks came out on top. In his words, they “banged on them A1.“
During an interview we had, Romey said
“My love for the Bucks runs deep. So, I have been a Bucks fan since I was a little kid in Chicago. My dad migrated there when I was young. He would take me to Milwaukee at eight or nine years old. He was the director of the Martin Luther King Center. He’s one of the organizers of their semi-pro league. So, coming up in the summers in Chicago, I would be a water boy and a ball boy for the players.”
He continues:
“I would shake their hands and get their jerseys and ask them to autograph shoes. And, you know, this was my first time getting out the ghetto and seeing professional basketball being played up close and being able to touch and feel players.
Once I was a teenager, I started playing basketball myself and going to the Bucks game. I got to see Ray Allen and those guys. Tape Allen, Iris, and them in game seven, one game away from going to the NBA finals, where they eventually lost Kobe and Shaq.
After that, all of those things and old-school memories and just writing for the books, I harnessed that energy into this record. It just came out, and it’s resonating, and it’s blowing up here.”
The instrumental for “Fear The Deer” mirrors the joy and exhilaration from gaining a victory. It resembles a triumph hip-hop beat that transitions to a highly energetic trap one. His cadence is passionate and free-flowing.
Romey was once a bright kid from Chicago on the South Side. He grew up in Wisconsin, Madison, and Milwaukee. In 1998, the musician started a record label called Get Rich Records.
Initially, the label was about getting money like Cash Money. But as Romey grew and evolved, the meaning of the record label shifted. He also has a clothing line called Echelon and a credit repair company called GI credit solutions. Additionally, he has a hub for sports called GI sports.
He adds, “The meaning is to get rich, spiritual, get rich physically, get rich emotionally. So I’m trying to motivate all my people to get rich in every part of their lives, not just financially. As I grew and learned, I did better once I knew better. I’m reciprocating that love back to my community and the people looking up to me as a role model/spokesperson for the culture.“
The further he got into his music journey, the more he accomplished. He defines himself as an artist, an entrepreneur, and a dad.
