Andy Muschietti plans to develop a trilogy of seasons for It: Welcome to Derry, an upcoming HBO series based on Stephen King’s legendary 1986 novel, IT. Muschietti, who directed the hit films IT (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), is working alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs to bring the series to fruition.
@BloodyDisgusting
In a recent interview on Radio TU, shared by BloodyDisgusting, Andy Muschietti revealed his plan to develop three full seasons for It: Welcome to Derry.
He explained that the series is inspired by the interludes in Stephen King’s novel, which feature chapters that focus on Mike Hanlon‘s investigative efforts. These sections offer glimpses into his 27-year quest to understand the entity, its origins, and the people tied to it. They detail his search for answers about what happened, who was involved, and the witnesses to the events.
Muschietti also shared that the series will explore key historical tragedies, such as the devastating Black Spot fire, the brutal massacre of the Bradley Gang—a group of bank robbers from the 1930s—and the catastrophic explosion at Kitchener Ironworks. Each time Pennywise reawakens, it signals the start of another cycle of horror marked by a major disaster.
Season 2 Discussion ✨
Although Season 2 of It: Welcome to Derry has not yet been officially greenlit, Andy Muschietti revealed that each of the three planned seasons would focus on one of the major historical events mentioned earlier.
He explained, “There’s a specific reason for telling the story in reverse chronological order. The first season will be set in 1962, the second will explore events from 1935, and the third will take viewers back to 1908.”
Muschietti also noted that Warner Bros. was extremely pleased with the outcome of Season 1 and expressed strong enthusiasm for moving forward with Season 2 as soon as possible.
The series is expected to premiere on HBO and Max in 2025, although a precise release date has not yet been announced.
