The mutants are coming…
As Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) marks the end of The Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios is officially shifting its focus to one of the most anticipated projects in franchise history—the X-Men. While details have been scarce since reports surfaced in May 2024 that screenwriter Michael Lesslie of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was in negotiations to pen the script, a new report suggests that the wait for mutant news may soon be over.
According to insider Jeff Sneider from The InSneider, the X-Men film is slated to begin production in 2025 for a 2027 release. This means that official casting news—and potentially a director announcement—could arrive within the next few months. With CinemaCon 2025 scheduled for March 31st – April 3rd, many speculate that Marvel Studios could use the event to drop its long-awaited X-Men bombshell.
Who Will Lead Marvel’s New X-Men?
The biggest question surrounding the MCU’s X-Men movie is casting—and rumors are already swirling. Sneider previously reported that Julia Butters of Freaky Friday is being eyed for Kitty Pryde, while Sadie Sink of Stranger Things and Harris Dickinson of Babygirl and Triangle of Sadness are rumored to be contenders for Jean Grey and Scott Summers (Cyclops).
While none of these castings have been officially confirmed, they align with Marvel’s trend of locking in rising young talent for multi-film contracts. The possibility of seeing Sink take on the iconic Phoenix or Dickinson leading the X-Men as Cyclops is already generating buzz among fans.
When Will the X-Men Arrive in the MCU?
Right now, the only officially announced 2027 Marvel movie is Avengers: Secret Wars May 7th, 2027. A film that many expect to serve as a grand reset for the MCU, possibly introducing mutants into the fold. Given that X-Men is reportedly targeting the same year for release, it’s possible Marvel will lay the groundwork for the mutants’ emergence before Secret Wars or shortly after its fallout.
Marvel’s Upcoming Slate Is The Road To The X-Men
Before X-Men makes its debut, Marvel Studios has an ambitious lineup to roll out:
- Captain America: Brave New World – February 14, 2025
- Thunderbolts* – May 2, 2025
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25, 2025
- Avengers: Doomsday – May 1, 2026
- Spider-Man 4 – July 24, 2026
- Avengers: Secret Wars – May 7, 2027
With Fantastic Four arriving in 2025 and Secret Wars closing out The Multiverse Saga in 2027, X-Men could serve as the MCU’s next big chapter, ushering in The Mutant Saga for years to come.
What’s Next?
Nonetheless, with production set to begin in 2025, expect a wave of major announcements in the coming months. Including casting confirmations, a director reveal, and possibly a first look at the film’s vision. If Marvel truly plans to go all-in on mutants, CinemaCon 2025 could be a game-changing moment for fans.
