Scoop of the Day: Box Office Shake-Up!
While a major franchise film continues to dominate the box office, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie is holding strong and showing remarkable staying power. Even more impressive? Four new releases cracked the top five, and none of them are sequels.
A Minecraft Movie pulled in $80.6 million during its second weekend, surpassing what many considered an optimistic forecast for its opening weekend. Rather than a frontloaded debut, the film is proving to have real staying power, fueled by memes, viral videos from theaters, and millions of enthusiastic younger fans. It’s become the spring hit theaters were hoping for back in March.
Domestic Box Office: $281 million
International Box Office: $269.6 million (with $39.8M from the UK)
Total So Far: $550 million

The film is well on its way to becoming Warner Bros.’ eighth title to cross the $1 billion mark, and is currently the highest-grossing film of 2025.
No. 2: The King of Kings
Angel Studios and Mofac Animation’s animated retelling of the Gospel stories debuted with $19 million, closely trailing the $19.6 million opening of Angel’s breakout hit, Sound of Freedom (2023). While matching that film’s long legs may be tough, The King of Kings is expected to hold strong through Easter weekend, thanks in part to Angel’s proven “Pay It Forward” model.
The film earned a rare A+ CinemaScore, becoming only the fifth animated film outside Disney/Pixar to receive that honor.
No. 3: The Amateur
Disney/20th Century’s spy thriller starring Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne opened with $15 million domestically and $32 million globally. While it faces an uphill battle against its $60 million budget, early reception has been solid:
- CinemaScore: B+
- Rotten Tomatoes: 61% (Critics) / 88% (Audiences)
No. 4: Warfare
A24’s gritty Iraq War drama launched with $8.3 million across 2,670 theaters. Directed by former Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, the film’s raw intensity and realism have struck a chord with viewers.

With a $20 million production budget, Warfare is on track to be profitable, and it’s earning rave reviews:
- CinemaScore: A- (only the second time A24 has received this grade)
From gaming adaptations and faith-based stories to hard-hitting war dramas and action-packed thrillers, this weekend’s box office proves there’s something for everyone and original storytelling is still alive and well.
