Ever since Coi Leray teased a snippet of her new song “Better Days” last October, fans caught themselves “singing the lyrics when it didn’t even drop yet.” Google even wanted to know what the hold up was, seeing that the question of “Better Days'” release was one of their popular searches.
Now, after several Tik-Toks and video posts of her singing along to the highly-anticipated single, Leray has decided to drop “Better Days” with a surprise feature: Fetty Wap. Since they’re both from the Garden State, it was only right for them to hop in the booth together (now to cue the debate about New Jersey supporting New Jersey). Still, Wap isn’t the only New Jerseyian that Leray has collaborated with. Just last year, Leray took part in Bennie Bates’ “That’s A Fact,” which was accompanied by a striking visual of the two flexing heavy and speaking, well, facts. More recently, however, Leray struck a few poses for Preme Magazine’s May 2020 Issue.
Produced by Nash B and Wymtime, “Better Days” sees Leray expressing how she regrets giving a fugazy the time of day. Tapping into her soft yet projective melodic side, the “Good Day” musician also adds that she’s chucking the deuces his way. The only people she’ll be riding for is her family and the gang. Aside from this, Leray also vows to stack up on Benjamins, for life. Leray refuses to love a boy who doesn’t even love himself. She sings, “Can’t let a nigga fuck up the bank/Only thing that you good for is the brain/When you see me, you don’t need to speak/All that shit don’t mean nothing to me.”
Her feature, Fetty Wap, takes a melodic approach to “Better Days,” also, except he leans more on the auto-croon side. In his verse, Wap explains why it’s important for others to be self-sufficient. He already has a lot on his plate as is and has no energy to waste. Wap’s main focus is getting to the bag, but even so, he won’t do backflips for it. Instead, he’ll keep working around the clock and see results because his work ethic is unmatched. Together, the two deliver a velvety register for “Better Days'” chorus and, in turn, prove that their musical chemistry is strong.
Production-wise, “Better Days” is led by a passionate guitar riff. The beat also carries open hi-hats, a booming baseline, and snares.
“Better Days” is paired with an anime-like visual that shows an animated version of Coi Leray and Fetty Wap. The video even presents viewers with a few lyrics so they can sing along.
