Deadline unveiled that Brett Haley will direct Grease‘s prequel, Summer Lovin’. The script is said to be written by Leah McKendrick.
The original 1987 musical, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, told the tale of bad biker boy Danny and good girl Sandy, high school teens who, after a short summer fling, came to find out they were attending the same high school. Although they come from different backgrounds, the two try to make their relationship work while singing now-classic songs that still resonate with today’s human race.
“Summer Lovin'” draws inspiration from one of the movie’s songs, “Summer Nights,” which goes in-depth about the fling that ignited Danny and Sandy’s passionate relationship. The forthcoming film will focus on that “fateful meeting and what followed.” The release date is TBA.
ComingSoon adds, “Grease has remained a popular title and soundtrack for Paramount ever since it’s ’78 release, forever cemented in pop culture.”
