To be lyrically gifted or equipped with angelic windpipes is a rarity itself. And sure enough, Los Angeles-based musician, Chanel West Coast, fits into the percentage that has both.
You might know Chanel West Coast as a host on MTV’s show, Ridiculousness, but she has done so much more.
During her time as a Young Money signee, Chanel West Coast worked with artists like Snoop Dogg, French Montana, Ty Dolla Sign, YG, and opened up for Cardi B, Rick Ross, Waka Flocka, to name a few, across the coast. In 2015, she released her WAVES mixtape with features from YG and B-Real.
Now, she’s solidifying herself as an independent artist, taking a relatable and laid-back approach to themes about love and everything life offers. Sonically, Chanel West Coast dabbles in pop, alternative R&B, and rap.
Chanel West Coast’s latest release, “No Plans,” is a summery R&B offering full of xylophone riffs, 808 slides, piano keys, and lush synths. Vocally, Chanel West Coast oscillates between a soft, mesmerizing range and expressive rhymes.
The lyrics at hand see Chanel West Coast giving her free time to a fellow who has piqued her interest. Throughout the song, she raps about how she’s fond of this man while hoping that he feels the same.
“Know you not my man, but I’m lovin’ how you tryin’,” she delivers. “Play my favorite song, when I’m witchu we be vibin’.”
Additionally, Chanel West Coast makes suggestions on how the two can spend their time together,
“Late night, let’s go for a drive/Let me see what’s up/Date night, make some reservations/Let you eat it up,” she spits with a bouncy cadence.
Deeper into the tune, the “Anchors” musician expresses her gratitude towards him and opens up about how she feels. Case in point, she’s got it bad for the kid.
“I post you on my story, in my DM they be hatin’/Salty ’cause we goals gotta ask ’em how it’s tastin.”
Before “No Plans” ends, Chanel West Coast unveils that she hopes they can go on more adventures soon because she wouldn’t want it any other way.
The music video that assists “No Plans” shows Chanel bored in the house and channel surfing. That is until a travel agency commercial pops up on the screen. After calling them to learn more information, she drifts to sleep and ends up at a beautiful resort. From there, viewers will get a glimpse of Chanel West Coast donning the cutest attire, hanging with friends, and serenading her beau. The video was co-directed by Pat Clark Productions and Chanel West Coast.
“2020 has been the year of no plans, so I felt like this was the perfect time to drop the video and keep people on a good vibe as we close out the summer,” Chanel West Coast added. “The track is fun and flirty, so I thought, what better way to compliment that than the ultimate tropical vacation?”
