Scoop of The Day
Pixar Animation Studios has officially announced that a sequel to the beloved 2017 film Coco is in development.
During a recent annual shareholder meeting, CEO Bob Iger revealed that Coco 2, a follow-up to the Oscar®-winning original, is currently in its early phases of production. In fact, Iger expressed excitement about the project, before promising that more details will be shared in the near future. In doing so, he stated:
“Although we’re still in the initial stages, we are confident that it will be brimming with humor, heart, and adventure”.
Coco 2 brings back the talented team that created the original film, featuring Oscar®-winning director Lee Unkrich, known for his work on Coco and Toy Story 3, along with co-director Adrian Molina, who also contributed to the first film. The sequel will be produced by Mark Nielsen, an Oscar-winning producer recognized for his work on Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2.
The first Coco film introduced audiences to Miguel, a spirited 12-year-old who dreams of becoming a musician, despite his family’s long-standing prohibition against music. He embarks on an adventure to the colorful Land of the Dead, seeking to uncover the true story behind his family’s heritage.
Coco received two prestigious Academy Awards, triumphing in the categories of Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the heartfelt melody “Remember Me”.
In addition to these accolades, the film earned a Golden Globe® for Best Motion Picture – Animated and was honored with a BAFTA for Best Animated Film. It also garnered Critics’ Choice Awards, winning both for Best Animated Feature and Best Song for “Remember Me,” solidifying its place as a beloved cinematic achievement.
