If you have been following the news cycle the last few weeks, you are probably aware of the sudden public demand to declare Ellen DeGeneres the next target in our fast-paced cancel culture.
Ellen, whose hosts The Ellen DeGeneres Show, has been known as the gold standard for daytime talk shows, has recently come under fire after multiple claims came to light from past employees and fans who voiced their personal experiences on Twitter.
The whistleblower to cause this influx of criticism from fans is comedian Kevin T. Porter, who requested that fellow Twitter users explain scenarios in which DeGeneres has been “mean” in March. In order to gain supporting claims, Porter went as far as to promise a $2 donation to the LA Food Bank for every story shared. He shared a donation receipt to the LA Food Bank two days later for $600.
Some of the most surprising tweets included Ellen complaining about a restaurant server’s chipped nail polish, her ignoring employees on their first day of work, and using fan art as props during sketches on the show.
This came as a surprise to fans who have known DeGeneres as a public figure who is most known for consistently donating thousand of dollars to fans in difficult situations, funding wildlife conservation causes, and spreading overall positivity with her famous motto to fans to “Be Kind”.
Celebrities to come to her defense include Katy Perry, Jerry O’Connell, Scooter Braun, and Kevin Hart.
Since the rumors have began circulating, the entirety of the show has been called into question as an internal investigation by WarnerMedia has began regarding claims of alleged racism and intimidation from ten former employees as reported by BuzzFeed in mid-July.
With so much back-to-back scrutiny, the idea of replacing Ellen for another favorable host such as The Late Late Show’s James Cordon had come into circulation as he is another favorite in the talk-show lineup offered in the U.S. However, with the investigation still open and the return date of September 9th quickly approaching, Ellen DeGeneres will remain the host for the 18th season of her show.
