According to Superhero Hype, Jason Momoa’s character, Duncan Idaho, is rumored to potentially return in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming movie Dune: Messiah. Momoa, who played a lead role in the 2021 film, Dune, witnessed his character’s death and absent in Dune: Part Two. In a word, Momoa’s character sacrifices himself by fighting a group of elite Sardaukar soldiers so that Timothée Chalamet‘s Paul Atreides and Rebecca Ferguson‘s Lady Jessica can escape.

If this buzz is true, it’ll align with the events of the source material. The Aquaman star would also be happy about this news because, in an interview last year, he expressed how he’d love to reprise his role in the new Dune film. Jeff Sneider also spoke on the hearsay during an episode of The Hot Mic podcast. During the sit-down, Sneider advised Rocha and the audience to approach the rumors with a “grain of salt.”
“It’s in the books, so it’s not a huge surprise, but I’ve heard that you’ll see the return of one Duncan… Idaho,” he stated.
Similar to the movie, Duncan dies in Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune. However, in the second book of the series, Dune Messiah, Paul is given a ghola by Guild Navigator Edric. The ghola, named Hayt, becomes the first of many artificial humans created in Duncan’s likeness, who appear throughout the series of novels.
The rumors about Jason Momoa’s return come after Deadline reported that Dune 3 is set to begin this June, a shift from earlier reports that suggested production wouldn’t start until 2026. The cast includes a slew of talented actors like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Dave Bautista, and Javier Bardem.
