Word of the Day
Jason Momoa is stepping away from his role as Aquaman to embrace the opportunity to portray his ultimate dream character from the DC universe.
The actor has revealed that he will finally bring to life his beloved comic book figure, Lobo, in the upcoming film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, produced by DC Studios.
After Jason Momoa’s recent Instagram post, Deadline reported that the actor will officially join the DC Universe, portraying the antihero Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie. The possibility of Momoa playing Lobo was initially teased by industry insider Daniel Richtman in July 2025.
Casting
This casting announcement follows nearly two years after Momoa hinted at a potential Lobo role in an Instagram Story. Back in January 2023, the actor shared cryptic but enthusiastic news about his talks with Warner Bros. and DC Studios, saying, “I’ve got some really good news. Great news with Warner Bros. Amazing. Wish I could tell you, but here it is…
Peter [Safran], I love you. James [Gunn], I love you. David [Zaslav]. Okay. To the future, to the future.”
Lobo, a character created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, made his debut in DC Comics’ Omega Men #3 in 1983. He is an alien from the once-idyllic planet Czarnia, now known for his role as a ruthless intergalactic mercenary and bounty hunter. Over the years, Lobo has been featured in several animated adaptations, including prominent appearances in the DC Animated Universe series Superman and Justice League. However, his live-action portrayals have been limited, with Emmett J. Scanlan bringing the character to life in the short-lived Krypton series.
Production Start Date
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to begin production on January 13, 2025. Although specific plot details have yet to be revealed, the film is inspired by Tom King’s 2022 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The adaptation for the big screen was crafted by Ana Nogueira, with Craig Gillespie chosen to direct. Alongside Jason Momoa’s casting, the confirmed members of the film’s growing ensemble include Milly Alcock in the lead role of Supergirl, Matthias Schoenaerts portraying the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hill, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle.
