Singer, songwriter, and now video producer Kehlani is back on her “quarantine style” music video roll with a creative “Bad News” visual that dropped on Thursday (July 9).
Directed by Hyphy Williams (a.k.a. Kehlani), the black-and-white montage captures the singer in a wedding dress and veil as she croons about being the quintessential ride or die lover. From sitting in a car, doing a photo shoot, drinking and smoking, sitting with some magazines, cocking a pistol, to pole dancing in the elegant gown, she depicts a story of unconditional love.
“I’m here, if no one else, I’m here. Right here, I’m never scared, no fear. No way, when you’re with me, you’re safe (oh oh). Like always, so let it fade and just go ‘head and give all that shit up,” she sings.
“Bad News” was shot in the same style of her previous videos for “F&MU,” “Everybody Business,” and “Toxic,” however, “Bad News,” truly raises the bar as it not only conveys the story of this bad romance, but it does so via a minimalistic lens. With only Kehlani painting this vignette portrait of love, lust, and vices the storyline is powerful enough to resound. Her sultry vocals truly provide a perfect canvas for this story to come alive.
This single is featured on her latest album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t, and according to a recent interview the singer had with Nadeska Alexis on her Apple Music show R&B Now with Nadeska, she revealed that Drake helped her name the album. “We’re just having, like, a life conversation, talking about the old music, talking about what we’re both ’bout to do,” she explained. “And then I was just talking about [my] personal life and I was just like, ‘Man, yeah it was good until it wasn’t’ and he was like, ‘Say that shit again,’ and I was like ‘What?’ and he was like ‘That’s your album.’ And I was like, ‘You might be fuckin’ right.’”
